More English Sunday-isms

Me, picking up my purse and heading towards the door: Are you ready Freddy?
C: "Freddy? My name is not Freddy."
Me: *in tears on the floor*

Later on that day:
C: Are you ready Freda?
Me: ???
C: You know, you said to me "Are you ready Freddy?", so I thought the girl equivalent would be "Are you ready Freda?"
Me: LOLLLLLL. But the whole point is that it rhymes!
C: I still don't get it....

I swear, French people sometimes.

Later on, we invited a friend over for dinner and I made tomates farcies (stuffed tomatoes). There was one left and we were discussing who would get it.
C: I know, we can make like Jesus.
Me: ???
Friend: ???
C: You know, we can cut it in pieces and then it will multiply, like zee feeshes.
Me: LOLLLLL
Friend: LOLLLL

And lastly, I didn't even think this was possible, but I'm dating someone who just might possibly make even more lists than I do. The other night, I was saying "We should probably figure out some kind of cleaning schedule for the apartment". Cuz you know.....it takes a bit more work to clean 50m2 than it does a shoebox, where one quick sweep and I was finished. C said "Actually, I was meaning to bring that up. I've been working on an Excel spreadsheet with all of the different rooms and what needs to be cleaned in them, and I thought we could assign how long it was going to take, how often it should be done and who was going to do each one".

Cue my surprised silence. Here I was thinking we'd have a talk along the lines of "Oh yeah, we should probably vacuum the rugs at least once a week, maybe defrost the fridge twice a year, etc." But he has a SPREADSHEET people. He is a MAN who likes to CLEAN. This is all new territory for me. But trust me, I'm not complaining!

I guy that realizes that cleaning needs to be done, with or without spread sheets is a keeper :)
You'd think with French phrases like:
En route les scouts....or
ça roule Raoul....
that C would get the giste of your Freddy phrase.
But 20 years down the road, my husband still says some pretty weird things in English, so maybe not :)

Love this one ... it is so funny to hear bits of conversations between people who speak different languages.

I just read your post to my British husband who shared my laugh,( we have funny word misunderstandings all the time even though we both speak English) but he did find it funny too that you need a cleaning schedule for that amount of space.

Having followed you for a long while, it's so nice to read these posts where you have found happiness in your romantic life. I am really happy for you.

It must be so hilarious?! Keep writing about them so we can have a little giggle.

I was talking to a friend about trying to get to Lyon during the strikes, he held out his thumb and said "you can go by hijacking".. I cracked up laughing and couldn't stop while he sat their confused!!

I had to smother my laugh (at work) when I read the first ready freddy bit, then I just gawped at the second bit (spreadsheet). Had to pick jaw up from floor, luckily no one walked past as I did it...

Your blog should carry a warning: NSFW
(not safe for work) !!! :)

Stick the spreadsheet on the fridge and invite your pals round for a laff!

I love the C-isms! Thanks for sharing them. I have one to share with you. When I was an exchange student to Tunisia, my host dad was looking up words in the French/English dictionary my first night with them. I was only 17, had never been away from home and was very shy. He was trying to make conversation with me and make me feel comfortable. After searching the dictionary he said to me, "Tell me, Sue, in America do you drink orange gravy for breakfast?" Well, that just cracked me up and whenever he wanted to make me laugh that summer he would say to me "orange gravy?". It totally broke the ice and was our joke while I lived with them.

That is really funny! I like the "ready Freda" -- at least he's trying :)
The chore schedule though -- wow! At first i'd be like, "OCD much?" but then, that also shows that he's willing to do chores himself, so that must earn him some points. A man who likes to clean (especially without having to be told to!) is a winner in my book.

Hey, I know plenty of guys that like to clean. But most of them live with other guys. hehehe. I have Excel spreadsheets to track our heating fuel usage, when I cut the grass, and whole lotta other stuff. But I'm retired, so it kind of replaces work for me.

And here's one of my favorite anglicisms in French: Quoi l'enfer!

My french hubby and I were cracking up at your post! Too bad I missed those awkward English phases with my hubby...I so much wish I could have been there for his mistake moments...instead of him making fun of my French ones ;-)

And I loved the Spreadsheet comment too funny! sounds like me a bit tho ;-)

lol! btw I don't know what it is about excel and French men but Seb loves to make spreadsheets for mundane things. And we just got a dad who joined my mom-taxi-cantine group for the kids school and he made this great spreadsheet for us! All this time we've just been three or four women calling or e-mailing each other each few days to arrange things like, "can you pick up Lola tonight, etc". It works well, efficient and all but now we barely talk so it's kind of lost the human element--the downside of rigid schedules in your personal life I guess.

Funny! I have never ever imagined that there could be some equivalents in English of French sentences like "Ça roule Raoul" or "Tu l'as dit, Henri".
And I think in the situation of your friend, I would not have understand too the joke at first ^^"

Sorry for the possible mistakes in my English, I suck when I try to speak in English.

Just discovered your blog today and it's a lot of fun ;)

My English do really sucks argh that's boring.
