Religion + popular media = disaster

Thank you to everyone for your comments & emails - so far, C seems to be on the mend.  And on a lighter note, while holed up in the hotel room this weekend, C & I came across a new show on TLC called "The Virgin Diaries".

The whole show was strange, but especially these two who, in addition to being virgins, were getting married without ever having kissed anyone before. Take a look for yourself:

Isn't that awful?  It's almost painful to watch - neither of them know what to do, so they are doing their best imitation of what they've seen on TV and the result is they look like they are eating each other's face off. And the whole time I'm sure they are both thinking "Is this what I've been waiting for all these years??"

On top of it, all throughout the show, they interviewed these two and they talked about how much they were waiting for there first night together and how perfect it was going to be.  But as the viewer, you could just see they were just setting themselves up for disaster.

And of course, they interviewed them the day after the wedding, and you could see how let down they both were, talking about how it wasn't at all like in the movies, that it was a lot more complicated and painful. I don't know...it just makes me sad that these kids hold out for so long based on religious reasons and the whole idea is so built up for them that they expect it to be magical and perfect from the get-go, and no one ever warns them of the contrary...

i hope c is much much better. i don't even know him and your happiness is something that's important to me.
the virgin diaries sounds so embarassing for those poor people -- but i have to confess i sometimes do go on a "16 and pregnant" bender. wow. maybe you'll write about similarly weird french tv.

Ewwwww that's such a creepy slobbery kiss!!! Yikes! I'm glad I don't get American tv - like a car crash you don't want to watch but you just can't help it!

Let's hope they get over the disappointment and realise that it's not the end of the world, but perhaps all that fanatical religious prescriptive crap is exactly that - crap, and they should learn to think for themselves.

Glad to hear C is on the mend.

Sorry to hear about C, hope he's on the mend. Those sound effects were awful, it would have been bad enough without it!

What a way to start my morning! Ha. That is whack! I just sent this to my BF, haha.I agree with your comments 100%. So, so sad... That's a divorce waiting to happen.

Some comments from YouTube on the vid that I found hilarious:

- It looks like a bird trying to feed its young.

- Porn is less disgusting than this

- He is a vampire ! :P

- Fish go glub glub glub.

- If you minimize your browser it sounds like a dog licking a mans balls.

LOL, it goes on....

Okay, let me try and finish my morning cafe....

EWWWWW. Bad, bad. Those poor people. What were they thinking?

That reminds me so much of the book "On Chesil Beach" by Ian McEwan.

Ah! That clip made me really uncomfortable. Saying that, I can't wait to catch this show when I'm back in NY in a few weeks!

Don't you love going back to the U.S and catching up on all of this crap? It's such reverse culture-shock!

I was JUST showing this clip to Dave the other night. It was hard to watch . . but I did. Over and over again. It's like slowing down when you see a car accident so you can see the damage.

Putting out good healing vibes for C. :)

I saw this vid last week and couldn't help but cringe. I actually have two friends here in the states who got married as virgins and the same thing happened with them. When they had their first kiss we were all like "Whooooooa!". You really just wanted to turn away as it was so strange looking.

They eventually got things together in this area and have a great marriage, but I will never be able to get that face eating kiss out of my mind for as long as I live. I think I'm traumatized! LOL!

Coming from the south, I know a lot of couples who never kissed until their wedding day.. I've always thought that was going too far. one of the weddings was a southern baptist wedding and everything about it was painful. I'm wondering if they ever managed to figure out the pleasure part before he knocked her up twice in a row at 19 yrs old, since birth control is the devil and all..

You need to watch Chelsea Handler's clip mocking the show's trailer. It is ridiculous. Ellen also did one on her show.

And what exactly is the sin in kissing? I don't get it.
