Totally Frenched Out

What's wrong with this picture?

I had to laugh tonight when C got his (oh-so-delicious, I might add) cheeseburger and immediately started eating it with a knife and a fork. Along with everything else on the plate, including the lettuce and tomato. (and of course sans sauce)

He also very gingerly held up the pickle and said "What's this??". I answered "It's a pickle. You eat it." To which he replied "Even the stick??". Lolllllll

I then told him he was in the US, so he should eat it with his hands. He tried, but after about two bites, it was deemed too messy and the knife and the fork came right back out.

Apparently you can take the Frenchman out of France....

omg are those crinkle cut fries??

I think you need to stage a cutlery intervention for C. Next time you guys get hamburgers or pizza, slip the waiter 5 bucks and tell him to forget the knives and forks. Tell him to ignore C's pleas. Tough love, Sam, tough love.

My thoughts are that if he had the burger to go he should eat with hands but if he is having it as a sit down meal he should use knive and fork, just politeness. My understanding is if everyone else is using cutlery then so should you, I certainly would do what C did if I was eating in a restaurant (not McDonalds). Maybe I'm old fashioned but that is my take on it.

I have to admit sometimes I eat a burger with fork and knife if it's very messy. But I have to laugh at Frenchies who eat fries with cutlery.

Does he eat French sandwich with a knife and fork too?
I think he is more French than the average French, really.

After 4 years in France, even I eat burgers with a knife and fork - and I'm a good old American! But there are some things I just can't abide by. As evidenced here, even cupcakes and peanut butter (!) have fallen to the French fork. Crazy!

I have a Brit friend/colleague who insists upon eating his potato chips (ahem, I mean crisps) with a fork and knife. He does it deliberately to baffle his American in-laws. Who knew there were so many cultural cutlery conundrums?
