Life with a colorblind man
Me: Do you know where the GPS is?
C: I think it's in my brown bag in the back.
Me: ?? Your brown bag (thinking he was talking about his backpack) is at your feet...
C: No, I'm talking about my army bag.
Me: Your army bag is green.
C: No it's not, it's brown.
Me: Um, sorry dear, it's green.
C: How did I not know that??
(ten minutes later)
C: Wait, what color is my backpack then???
Me: Brown
C: What?? But I've had it for like five years now.
Me: What color did you think it was?
C: Black
Me: Black??
C: You know, like a "light" black.
Me: Lolllllll
C: Wait, are you lying to me?
Me: Lolllll
C: Seriously, what color is it??

WOW he's colorblind for sure! Weird he just realized it now...I had 2 good friends in college who were colorblind. One wanted to join the Air Force and found out that way :-( They said no! And the other was a girl...she had to have someone let her know which pants were grey, brown and black. Then got dressed that way...can you imagine....C prb never matched and no one ever said anything. But lucky he is a boy and not a girl!
my frenchie is colourblind too and we used to argue for ages about the colour of things - he used to ask his bro to back him up (shame he's colourblind too!) Now I just describe things differently so he knows what *shirt *bag *thing i'm talking about! grey and green and brown are mysteries for him.
Maybe it's a frenchman thing. Mine always confuses red and green. He can see the difference, just thinks red should be called "green" and green should be called "red".
Awesome!! My sweetie is colorblind as well. Is it a man thing?!
TN-His parents actually figured out he was colorblind when he was four, when he was told to draw a brown horse and he drew a green one!! I think it's mostly certain shades of colors he can't distinguish - gray, green and brown are the main ones, but he sometimes has trouble with light purple & red too.
Oneika - I know it's way more common for men to be colorblind that women. How random is it that so many of us are with colorblind men though??
This is such great material.. Love it..
Yeh, sounds like he may be colourblind... I don't know though... But, I do know that Alex has said stuff like that from time to time and I've quizzed him on colours... Maybe all French men are colourblind!
Uh oh...was he doing any driving in the States? Hope he wasn't confusing red and green stop lights ;)
Wait! How do you all know it isn't you who are colorblind and not the guys? Huh?
Yes, ok. You have corroboration from others, including parents. Curses. Foiled again. Color me green. Or brown. Or light black.
It is pretty rare for women to be colour blind since it's a mutation on the x chromosome. Men only have one X, we would need both parents to have the colourblind gene in order to have it.
My friend is a tattoo artist and he's colourblind... ahha would you want a tattoo from C?
Yup it is much more rare for women because it is a recessive gene - so you need it on both sides AND then there is a 50/50 chance.
My dad is colorblind as well as my maternal grandfather so my mom isn't but carried the recessive gene.
My sister isn't colorblind but alas I am... it isn't very strong (have problems with purples etc and when I take the bubble test I see both numbers - so that's a little f**ed up!)
Only downside to women being colorblind is that if I have a son he would automatically be colorblind... as MG says, I'm defective! lol
Nothing to do with colour-blindness, but I see you're from Minnesota. We lived in Minneapolis for a while and had the odd holiday up around Ely, MN and absolutely loved it. Still have very good friends in the Twin Cities, too.
This reminds me of the games my ex used to play with me -- what color is x? -- very irritating. :-)
I have an app on my phone that improves color perception. Maybe we can try it on C the next time we meet?
My Dad was color blind and only could see blue and yellow. He apparently saw "other" colors instead of the right ones. My Mom questioned him once and determined that primer grey looked like teal to him. I always picked his clothes out for work.
You don't want to know about the wiring in this house as he was a DIYer. Many differently colored wires attached end to end. Scary.
We were just looking at the stats the other day. 8% of French men and 0.45% of French women are colourblind. We were looking because it's ridiculous that the ONF chose a national colour for marking the trees to be felled each year and it's a shade of red that colourblind people can't see on the tree unless they're like a foot away from it. With 8% of the population colourblind you'd think they'd bring in a colourblind person during the tests to check they could see it. - There are many lumberjacks in France that lose precious time 'cause they have to squint at each tree in the forest before cutting it, knowing that they risk a fine if they screw up.
I have had this conversation a million times with my husband (of ten years).
I came into our marriage with a brown luggage set which he claims is "army green". It is BROWN. It is a soft, feminine, beigy brown.
He swears it's green.
We also have issues with pink/red.
Ha ha, I'm also married to a colorblind Frenchman! Between color and vocabulary issues, life is never boring...
My husband usually wore navy suits, but he decided he wanted a grey one, so off he went and bought it. It was a beautiful suit, and he wore it a lot. One day I said I was taking his brown suit to the cleaners. He said he didn't have a brown suit. I told him his grey suit was brown. He never wore it again.
