Totally Frenched Out

This post is for all the ladies out there - what's your take on heart-shaped jewelry? Do you love it? Hate it? Just find it cheesy?

I myself am somewhere between hating it and finding it incredibly cheesy. I don't remember what TV show we were watching the other night (maybe The Office??), but one of the main female characters said something about how all women secretly hate heart-shaped jewelry. And I was like "Amen Sistah!"

C turned to me in surprise and said "What??", and I was like "I'm pretty sure most women can't stand heart-shaped jewelry, but that they wear it because men keep giving it as a present. Damn jewelry stores & their OTT marketing campaigns". And then he got all red and was quiet for a bit....and now I'm wondering if that's not what he got me (or was planning on getting me) for my upcoming birthday.

OOPS.

But that got me thinking - how would I react if he gave me something heart-shaped? Fab gave me a heart-shaped watch when he moved back to France and I promptly turned around and returned it for one I liked better. He was a bit hurt at the time, and I realize now I probably should've just sucked it up and worn it. But now it's ten years down the road- have I changed? Would I wear it if C gave it to me? I'm still not sure. He's into very simple things, so I guess there isn't much chance of him buying something super ostentatious or in-your-face. But either way, given my recent gaffe, I guess I'll probably never know!

Hey Sam, I think it was on a recent episode of the office. I agree with you - it was something that I was VERY into when I was a lovestruck teenager ("I want EVERYONE to know that I'm in LOVE!") but now that I'm in my late twenties, it seems very cheesy and "me me me".

Of course, that being said, if my SO gave me a heart-shaped something, I would wear it - every so often - to make him happy. But he's not a heart-shaped jewelry kind of guy, so i'm not too worried !!

I have a necklace with a heart pendant on it that looks like one in Legally Blonde. I wear it every now and then but I wouldn't wear hearts every day.

Well, since I've never gotten "heart" shaped jewelry from anyone (EVER)- I can't say that I would or wouldn't like it.. But, I would find it corny... and I'm sure that men who get it for women as gifts are just pronouncing their love with something "romantic" - to me, it's not really romantic..
Anyhow... I wonder if he got you something heart-shaped.. judging by his reaction.. How did you guys get on the subject? Was he the one who brought it up?
Oh well, at least he knows that you don't like heart-shaped jewelry!!
Take care,
Leese

Here's the deal. Men don't read minds. If there is something you like or something you don't like, don't wait for him to figure it out as you drop subtle hints. They won't pick up on it. Tell him straight out; trust me, you'll both be happier. It may not fit your idea as romance but then again, wearing something you really don't like just because he thought you might like it (and may have been making a wild stab in the dark anyway) is not romantic either.

Yeah, I agree with Anne. It's good you said something, even if he'd already gotten you something heart-shaped, because now he can return it and get you something you'll actually wear!

Also, I agree that heart-shaped things are kind of corny.

I have a little heart shaped pendant that my husband got me way back when we were first together. I liked it then and still wear it now because it reminds me of our beginnings together... I don't think he would get me anything heart shaped now, but I do like the reminder of our 'younger' selves...

I have a heart-shaped pendant on wire and I love it. But my guy didn't give it to me, my aunt made it!

I neither have ever received heart shaped jewelery (my man refuses to surprise me with jewelery, fear of getting it wrong)

I would wear a necklace or bracelet with a heart but a watch, ring or earrings, no. def not the watch.

good on you that you told the truth. If he has taken back a heart shaped something before giving it to you, good! You've got more chance to actually like your present!! I don't think you should wear something that you really don't like, you're not being honest and your man will never learn what you do actually like!

Heart-shaped. Difficult one. I've got two heart-shaped necklaces. One is Dior so that's perfectly acceptable, and the other is in Amber, which is also acceptable for me (Amber). Both were gifts from family members, so I can say that I would never buy heart-shaped stuff for myself.

Anything my hubby gives me, I wear, and I know it makes him happy to see me wear it. I guess i'm lucky because I like 99% of the things that he buys me. Jewelry-wise, if he gave me something cheesy like a heart-shaped bracelet or necklace, depending on how big or gaudy it was, i'd wear it from time to time and then put it away for posterity's sake. Someday i'm sure my future little girl will just love to inherit all the jewelry that I didn't like enough to keep for myself.

I think every girl has their opinion about heart-shaped jewellery. Usually the ones who love it also have a butterfly or Winnie the Pooh tattooed somewhere on their bodies, but à chacun son truc, right?

I think you should wear jewellery YOU like and are comfortable in, and not just to make someone happy. Jewellery is a statement about ourselves, like the clothes we wear, or how much make-up we put on. You don't strike me as a heart-shaped jewellery wearing girl, so I don't think it would suit you. The exception being a heart-shaped navel piercing...then nobody has to see that shizz.

I agree with you. (And Anne in the comments.) Hate the hearts. Ewwww! I might have mentioned this early on with my husband because he has never gotten me anything that cheesy. But then, he probably wouldn't anyway. He's classy like that.

Why don't you just sit down and ask him why he looked so peeved, honesty helps. He nay was only thinking along those lines and couldn't believe he got it so wrong.

Oh I hate heart shaped jewelry. But I am a weird girl in that I don't really like jewelry at all. My parents buy me something nice for Christmas and my birthday every year, and I keep telling them they are wasting their money because I don't wear any of it. I wear one pair of earrings, one necklace, and my college ring every day, and that's it.

yes, hearts are terribly unsophisticated in jewelry, and also on clothing, license plate holders, etc. let the teens keep them for the childhood-adult transition.

I think like the first commenter said it's something I associate more with teenagers than well grown ups.
I'm lucky my husband never gave me something of the sort.
As for C. well just be glad you told him before he gave you anything, at least he has a chance to return it.

I wouldn't wear anything heart-shaped. It is cheesy, corny... I think it's more for little girls/teenagers.

What I realized is that most men have no idea what women want. If you don't want to be disappointed, you need to be very clear about what you like or don't like.

Now I am 'loling' at myself because I am wearing a watch (http://www.amazon.fr/Fontenay-BR204AB-Rhodi%C3%A9e-Analogique-Bracelet/dp/B0018NJ7W0/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&s=watch&qid=1275495080&sr=1-16) that has hearts! But I never realized they were hearts until later. It's not that obvious and I love love love this watch anyway.

Btw, is it OK to link your blog now?

Whew, I'm glad I'm not the only one - and I'm also glad C now knows I'm not a fan of it!

I only have one heart-shaped piece of jewelry, but I guess I was influenced by some book or movie when I was a kid because I used to want a heart shaped locket more than anything. I never got one, but I thought it was just so great when I was a kid.

My first serious bf got me a heart-shaped necklace pendant that I wore everyday, but underneith my clothing. It was sort of like a promise ring so I never took it off, but since it was heart shaped, I never showed it off either.

As for the current relationship, I flat out told Andrew when we first started dating (and he was buying me gifts more frequently) to never buy me jewelry unless he specifically saw me express an interest in it. I'm extremely picky and didn't want to hurt his feelings so I let him know the first two weeks of our relationship to just steer clear of buying me jewelry. Luckily, he did a great job on choosing the engagement ring, though! :)
