Totally Frenched Out

I'd been meaning to post about some of the advertising differences between rural America and cosmopolitan France, but Jasmin beat me to half of it here, so go check out her post first.

And then take a look at the one I saw on my way to work one day:
Yes! People, that is solution! You can't pay for your car or your mortgage and you probably can't afford health insurance, but go ahead and HAVE MORE BABIES ANYWAY! After all, the new estimates have come out and it *only* costs $204,060 to raise a child to the age of 18 today (college not included). That's only a 15% increase since 1960 (when it cost $177,440), so it's practically a steal!

Copulation is the answer - why hasn't President Obama thought of this before? It's certainly been the French motto long enough, ie "you should have one for yourself, one for your spouse and one for your country". Though I wonder if they would eschew it knowing they're now copying the French?

Haven't seen that billboard around my part of America. You always find the craziest signs out there in the MN area!
~$200,000 for 18 years is actually not that much considering how much money my baby is actually SAVING me! Seriously! Since he was born we can no longer go out for expensive meals at posh restaurants, spend >$20 to see a movie, we can no longer hang out in trendy bars drinking $10 cocktails, and I buy less fancy clothes since I have no place to wear them out to! The cost averages over 18 years to about $1000 per month, but my baby is priceless to me.

Several months ago I ended up on some mom blogs and read some discussion of the price of giving birth in the States. I think one of the women said her hospital offered "payment plans" where you started paying a bit before the birth and then paid of the thousands of dollars over a few years. I hope I'm remembering correctly $13,000 as the number the woman cited (well, the anesthesiologist has to make his BMW payments). No need to mention of course how just about everything pregnancy related is reimbursed in France.

oh dear god now I REALLY want to do a road trip through the mid-west..do people like that even exist?? It's so irresponsible to have babies if you can't pay for them (the government doesn't give you tons of social aid...)

I guess you should double that amount if you add in college. I just read last week that my university now costs $50,250 per year!!!

When Obama came to the University of Notre Dame( where I live), the prolife groups hired airplanes with banners of abortion pictures to fly over the city for like a month before he came. Also, they had trucks driving through town with abortion pictures plastered all over them. Lovely. Gotta love their reasoning skills on that.

I just read this post and cracked up. I just came back to Wisconsin from France to visit my family, and I saw this billboard on US 41 -- my mom and I spent a good 15 minutes trying to even figure out WHAT IT MEANT. I don't get it. Stimulate the economy by... having babies? Isn't it easier to just go shopping for yourself or something?
